Sinossi: La storia di Jake (Russell Crowe), un giocatore d’azzardo miliardario, che decide di riunire i suoi più grandi amici nella sua tenuta di Miami per una partita di poker speciale. La vittoria permetterebbe ai partecipanti di vincere più denaro di quanto abbiano mai sognato, ma in cambio dovranno rinunciare a qualcosa che hanno tenuto premurosamente nascosto per la loro intera vita: i loro segreti.

 

Recensione di Catello Masullo: A sole 5 settimane dall’inizio delle riprese i soldi per girare c’erano tutti, la troupe era pronta, ma la sceneggiatura era in alto mare ed il regista, per motivi di famiglia, aveva dato forfait. I produttori hanno allora fatto un appello disperato a Russel Crowe perché potesse salvare la produzione, assumendosi l’impegno di sceneggiatura e regia, oltre che interpretarlo da protagonista. In quel periodo Crowe aveva appena perso il padre. E, come ci ha raccontato in occasione della presentazione del film alla Festa di Roma, ha deciso di fare come avrebbe fatto suo padre, il quale non avrebbe mai lasciato i 280 membri della troupe senza lavoro da un giorno all’altro, mettendo in serie difficoltà 280 famiglie. Ha quindi accettato. Ha buttato giù una prima stesura della sceneggiatura in 9 giorni, e la seconda in soli 4 giorni. Mentre nel frattempo chiamava al telefono gli amici attori per convincerli ad essere nel suo film. Girato durante il lockdown più severo in Australia, interrotto per il contagio di un componente della troupe, ripreso 7 mesi dopo, quando il set costruito era stato spazzato via da un’alluvione. Una impresa davvero ragguardevole. Soprattutto per uno che per la sua opera prima aveva impiegato due anni nella preparazione. Date le premesse, il risultato è tutt’altro che deludente. Il film è spettacolare e va oltre le caratteristiche dell’action movie. Con interessanti approfondimenti di temi altri e sensibili, come quelli della malattia, della amicizia, dei rapporti padre/figlia, della generosità e dell’eredità.
