recensione di ROSSELLA POZZA: Johnny Depp porta alla Festa di Roma una sua opera da regista molto ambiziosa e molto libera, a volte quasi anarchica. Un film ricco di ritmo, di fascino, di gag a tratti irresistibili. Di duelli recitativi da antologia del cinema (memorabile quello, del protagonista Riccardo Scamarcio con il monumentale Al Pacino: una scena che in origine nella sceneggiatura era di 17 pagine, già da far tremare le vene ai polsi di qualsiasi attore, riscritta la mattina stessa che doveva essere girata da Depp e portata a 28 pagine. Scamarcio, nella conferenza di presentazione alla stampa ha confessato tutto il senso di inadeguatezza che provava prima di girarla, ma ha poi pensato: “Se Johnny Depp pensa che io possa farcela, allora ce la farò!”. Lo scambio di battute tra Al Pacino è di quelli da incorniciare. Il vecchio mercante d’arte cerca di umiliare il giovane Amedeo Modigliani, facendo una offerta offensiva per l’acquisto di suoi 3 quadri: “Le posso dare 600 franchi. / Io non venderei un mio dipinto nemmeno a 5.000 franchi. /non intendevo per ciascun dipinto, ma per tutti e tre. Ma cosa ha ancora nella sua borsa… /non tocchi le mie cose! / (Prendendo la scultura di una testa): ma lei è uno scultore, non è un pittore. Questa scultura gliela compro per 5.000 franchi. /non è in vendita. / tutto e tutti sono in vendita/ Lei non ha capito, io non sono in vendita e questa scultura non è in vendita. / le do 20.000 franchi in contanti nelle sue tasche subito, le cambieranno la vita. / Lei non ha abbastanza soldi per acquistarla e non li avrà mai. Io sono molto più ricco di lei. Lei potrà dire che è esistito. Io, invece, sono vissuto…. Il gusto lei ce l’ha nel buco del culo, signor Gangnat!”). Il film è sontuoso, barocco, di eccellente confezione, fantasioso, provocatorio, di grandi interpretazioni (un plauso particolare merita Riccardo Scamarcio, anche per il suo ottimo inglese, probabilmente scelto da Depp dopo averlo visto interpretare il pittore maledetto ne “L’Ombra di Caravaggio” di Michele Placido, tra le sue migliori interpretazioni di sempre).
